Prescription Medication Storage

Lock it up:  Prescription Medications should be stored in lock boxes or locked cabinets, preferably in a location your child does not frequent. Lockable medical bags are fire, smell, and rip-proof, and offer a solid option for locking up medications.

Count it up:  Count pills when you pick up a prescription and recount weekly. If counts do not match expected use, someone is accessing them.

Talk it up:  Warn your youngsters that taking prescription or over the counter drugs without supervision can be just as dangerous and potentially lethal as taking street drugs.  Signs of prescription medication misuse or poisoning include constricted or dilated pupils, drowsiness, confusion, slurred speech, and sudden changes in mood or energy. If you suspect accidental ingestion or misuse, contact Poison Control or your healthcare provider immediately. If individual collapses, has a seizure, has trouble breathing or can't be awakened: Call 911 Now!
